Hakan and Hanna Ekstrom are a Swedish-American couple with a passion for Fika, for baking, and for Ometepe. After settling on the island, they soon started dreaming of Swedish Cinnamon Buns, but sadly there were none on the island at that time. Desperate for Fika Bread, they assembled a local team, and Nica Fika was born!

Hanna and Hakan live about half of each year on their organic farm in Balguë, Finca Ometepe Ometepe and spend the other six months visiting their children and grandchildren or exploring the world.

Finca Ometepe is also home to three rescued dogs, two rescued cats, a large herd of dairy goats, three cows, three horses, three donkeys, and numerous free-range chickens, turkeys, and guinea hens. Over 25 kinds of fruit and vegetables are grown on the farm, many of which are used in Nica Fika dishes! No pesticides or chemical fertilizers have been used on the land for over 10 years.
